Would You Be Friends With You?
Share
You walk into a cafe, order your regular fries, and find the cosiest corner. But as you settle in, you notice someone in the other corner. They are scrolling through their phone, probably re-reading a text ten times before replying. Their knee bounces in that oddly specific rhythm you know too well. And when they catch your eye, it is like looking into a mirror - because, well, you kind of are.
You have just met yourself.
No, I don’t mean your 5-year-old self or any younger version of you. I mean you, the actual version of you, right now in this journey. The one who has grown, stumbled, rebuilt, and figured things along the way. The one shaped by experiences, 2 am thoughts, and all the weirdly specific things that make you, you.
So, why shy away from the self you created over the years?
Now the real question is: Would you be friends with you?
The Self-Friendship Audit
Let’s break it down. Spending time with yourself would mean dealing with:
✅ Your iconic (sometimes dry) sense of humour.
✅ The way you overanalyse things, like why that one barista seemed slightly less cheerful today.
✅ The fact that you hype your friends but somehow downplay your wins.
✅ The random bursts of confidence that make you say ‘I’ve got this!’, only for self-doubt to crash the party ten minutes later.
Would you find all this endearing, or would you roll your eyes and ghost yourself?
Are You Your Own Best Critic or Best Friend?
So here’s the thing - if you treated your friends the way you treat yourself, would they stick around? Would they appreciate being reminded of their most embarrassing moments weekly? Would they enjoy hearing “Wow, you really messed that up” instead of “You will figure it out”?
We hype our friends but hesitate to give ourselves the same energy. We are patient with their mistakes but act like our own missteps are the end of the world. We cheer them on, yet we tell ourselves to “be realistic” when we dream too big.
Why the double standard?
If You Were Your Roommate…
Imagine yourself as a roommate. Would you enjoy living with you? Would you appreciate the motivational pep talks in the shower? The deep existential crisis at 1 AM? The way you suddenly decide to rearrange your entire life at the most inconvenient times?
Would you laugh at your quirks, or would you find them exhausting?
Because here is the thing: You are your lifelong roommate. You are your person - through the best days, the worst times, questionable food cravings, and every confident and awkward encounter. You might as well accept it and learn to enjoy your own company.

So…Would You Be Friends With You?
You spend every second of your life with yourself. You hear every thought, every doubt, every "I should have said that instead!". But you also witness every small win, every inside joke, and every odd and fun part of yourself.
Consider accepting yourself - not just in an "I guess I can put up with myself" way, but in an "Oh wait, I am actually pretty great" kind of way.✨
The Friendship Test: Would You Pass?
So let’s settle this. If you met yourself, would you:
- Become besties instantly, bonding over mutual weirdness?
- Vibe but slightly judge yourself a little.
- Ghost yourself because yikes!
If your answer is closer to 1, congrats! You have mastered the art of self-acceptance.
If you are hovering around 2 or 3, good news - you can start working on that friendship right now 🙂
At the end of the day, you don't just deserve your friendship - you need it. So, be a good friend to yourself. You are kind of awesome😏
P.S: If this made you smile (or think a little too hard), send it to a friend. Or, you know, yourself. Because we all need a reminder to be a little kinder to the person we hang out with the most - us ♥️
